The phoenix.

"There was a silly damn bird called a phoenix back before Christ, every few hundered years he built a pyre and burnt himself up. He must have been furst cousin to man. but every time he burnt himself up, he got hismelf born all over again. And it looks like we're doing the same thing, over and over, but we've got one damn thing the phoenix never had, we know the damn silly things we just did. We know all the damn silly things we've done for a thousand years and as long as we know that and have it around where we can see it, someday we'll stop making the goddamn funeral pyres and jumping in the middle of them. We pick up a few more people that remember every generation."

I think this is one of the most interesting quotes I've ever read. It is basically an elaborate analogy of how ever since man arrived, history has tended to repeat itself. And, generally not in a good way. Now, Interesting thing is, I can't recall any specific times when i said to myself "well, there's history repeating itself again!" ok, so economic recessions are a trend, but supposedly 'impossible to prevent', and I'm sure the amount of restrictions that would have people going insane. WWI and WW11 could be considered...I don't know...

Anyways, the point is, we manage to repeat the tragic events in our history, and they probably follow a specific pattern, yet we fail to recognize it! we can predict trends in human nature, and we can alter our own genes, but we cannot prevent mass scale, obvious trends in human history!

Another thing I like about the quote is how the narrator hold an almost spectator-like perspective, as if no amount of his energy or input could alter the world's course.

Oh, I remember one. Warren Harding was Eelcted as the President of the United States, and then they realised that he was an absolute fool! 100 years later, they elect George W Bush!!! or supposedly he was elected, I don't really know if he was. I mean, his father was a Buisness man AND a politican, and then his son gets elected as President, who doesn't come across as the most adequate man for the job. Sounds like a scandal to me... and the thing is, no one is going to do anything about it. Theres a speech in the final moments of Zeitgeist that talks about governements, and how the people should be running this, but when you look over at the United states things happen, such as the 9/11 scandal (so I believe), the war in Iraq, which make no sense, and are simply detramental to the reputation and moral of the society, and no one is stopping it!!! I hope it is that people are simply too lazy to act, because laziness us curable, however ignorance and self-mindedness is far worse, and is not curable. When people act on a mass scale, they have the ability to change anything, and if enough smart people get together with enough of the population, hopefully they can stop the world from this seemingly irreversible trend of repeating out mistakes. And hopefully that group does not become corrupt, in which case we will have to start all over again.

Sorry for so little pictures, I'll post soon...

Sunday Skyline.

Sunday Skyline

I shot this panorama in Boston in July. I liked the sepia, reminded me of a shot I saw in the MIT electonics building when we visited.

Sunday Skyline plays at the Reverb on October 15th at 7:30 pm. If you are in Toronto and now busy saving the worlds from some unknown crisis, I suggest you attend.
